तीजरी की कथा Teejree ki kathaa. The story of the third eye.
The Story of Teej/Third Eye. There are two versions of this story. First Story: Once Parvati while playing, put her hands over Shiva eyes. The whole world fell into darkness and gloom. Life was extinguished and men and beasts started crying out in panic. But soon the third eye burst open on Shiva's forehead and the world lighted. But so much force came out from His eye that it burnt to ashes the Mountain Himalaya in front of Him. Parvati was distressed to see her Father's kingdom destroyed. Therefore, she pleaded with Shiva to restore it and so He did. Spiritual Significance: - The darkness of ignorance is dispelled from the world when God Shiva grants the third eye of wisdom to the souls by imparting Godly knowledge. Second story: The second story is about the Teej Vrat celebrated by virgins and married women in the northern Indian country. Teej marks the third day after the new moon of every month and the third day after the full moon night of every lunar month. On this festival, virgins pray for a good husband and married women fast for their husbands' long life. They break their fast only after they see the moon. Parvati fasted and penanced for many years and got Lord Shiva as her husband in her 108th birth; thus, Parvati is also known as Teej Mata. Once, there was a queen who was fasting on this day. Her brothers did not believe in the ritual, so they went far from the house and lit a fire. They came and told her that she could break her fast because the moon had risen. She believed them on seeing the light in the distance. During fast, women are not allowed to sew. The queen started sewing something and each time she put her needle into the cloth a needle pierced her husband who was far away. He fell unconscious. When the queen went home to her husband, she realized her mistake and started removing the needles. She decided to remove the needles from his eyes at the end so that he did not have to see how many needles were sticking in his body. Before removing the needles pierced in the eyes, she went away to freshen up. In the meanwhile, her maid took out the needles from the king's eyes and told him that she was his wife. He had lost his memory in unconsciousness, so he believed her. The queen had to live as their maid. She bid her time and served them quietly. Happy with her gracious manners, the king asked her to make a wish. She asked for a doll. She started talking to the doll, play-acting the story of a queen who became a maid and the maid who became a queen. Once the king heard her story and realized the truth and the queen was once again restored to her rightful position. Spiritual Significance: - In this story, it is shown that because of the imperfection in following the ritual, the queen lost her husband and her real position but later, she could restore her position. Similarly, the souls who were worship worthy and sovereigns of the Sat Yuga became insolvent by forgetting the Godly knowledge and became slaves to the Maya (the queen becoming a servant). The Supreme Father of all the souls, Shiv Baba reincarnated onto the earth and made the souls to realise their original state and their status of Sat Yuga by telling them the story of their 84 births. The souls who realised their mistake, are making their best effort to reattain their status of Sat Yuga. Thus, by getting the Third Eye (of Knowledge), the souls are regaining their lost sovereignty (just as in the story, the king got the remembrance of her queen).
