योग yog [S.], m. 1. connection, union. 2. combination; conjuncture (as of heavenly bodies); agreement, similarity. 3. application, use. 4. means; occasion, opportunity. 5. yoga, a theory or practice of abstract meditation undertaken to bring the soul towards or into union with the supreme spirit; bodily exercises or disciplines, as conducive to the above. 6. sum, total. 7. contribution. — योग-क्षेम, m. acquisition and keeping (of property): prosperity, well-being; property, assets; profit. योग-दान, m. esp. fig. contribution (to, में). योग-निद्रा, f. the sleep of a deity, or of a devotee; enchanted sleep (specif. mythol., of the palace guards at the birth of Kr̥ṣṇa); light sleep. योग-फल, m. = ~, 6. योग-बल, m. the power of yoga; magical or supernatural power. योग-माया, f. the creative power of the supreme spirit personified (as in the daughter born to Yaśodā at the time of Kr̥ṣṇa's birth); the magical power said to be possessed by yogīs. योग-शक्ति, f. supernatural power (as that of a yogī). योग-सिद्ध, m. & adj. one who has successfully attained the goal of yoga; perfected by yoga. योगात्मक [˚ga + ā˚], adj. combinatory: ling. agglutinative. योगारूढ़ [˚ga + ā˚], adj. & m. absorbed in abstract meditation; a yogī. योगासन [˚ga + ā˚], m. a posture furthering meditation, yogic posture. योगेश्वर [˚ga + ī˚], m. a great yogī, or sage; master magician; a deity, esp. Śiva.
