चित्त — chitt: heart, mind and inner life in the murlis

Estimated reading time : 4 mn

The definitions and explanations are newly written editorial material, translated from the French draft. Examples preserve Hindi sentences and actual published translations, checked against their context.

The word and its cultural context

चित्त — chitt in Hindi, citta in Sanskrit transliteration, is here a masculine Hindi noun of Sanskrit origin. It should not be confused with चिट्ट. The Murli dictionary entry gives mind and heart. The examples concern inner life rather than the physical heart.

The Monier–Williams entry reproduced by TransLiteral records thinking, intention, heart and mind, as well as memory among its uses. This range requires contextual reading. A function assigned within one philosophical school does not automatically become the murli definition.

The site also reports a Vedantic account of चित्त as a component of the inner instrument. That account belongs to the cultural context; the BK quotations below do not establish an autonomous psychic faculty exclusively storing memories.

Published translations of the word

French: cœur. English: heart. These equivalents are verified in the examples of 17 July 2022 and 27 March 2024. The passage of 30 October 2022 also uses them when discussing what is held inwardly and its effects on speech. French esprit and English mind are explanatory proposals here, not additions to the published list based solely on a dictionary.

Some compounds are translated by reformulating the whole quality, without a separate noun for चित्त. A word equivalent should not be extracted mechanically from a whole-sentence translation.

Proposed translations

Heart / cœur is preferred when the text contrasts inner joy with facial expression or asks one not to keep others’ mistakes. Mind / esprit may suit a more general explanation. Inner life / vie intérieure explains the psychological field without imposing a division between thinking and feeling; it is a paraphrase rather than an automatic replacement.

Memory would be too narrow for the selected passages. Consciousness can be ambiguous if understood merely as wakefulness or moral conscience. One should not automatically assign thoughts to मन, discernment to बुद्धि and storage to चित्त: this allocation is not established by the sample.

One central meaning, two illustrated aspects

The examples concern the same inner life: what is felt there and what is held there. These are aspects of one use, not two different faculties. Examples are limited to short sentences whose published correspondences could be verified.

1. The heart as inner life: joy

The contrast between heart and face distinguishes experienced joy from a merely smiling appearance. Hi43–hi47 develop this contrast. चित्त is therefore not simply an information store here, but affective and mental inwardness.

हिंदी — मूल / Hindi — original : हर्षित चित्त हर्षित मुख , दोनों हर्षित हों .

Français — publié : Un cœur joyeux et un visage joyeux, les deux devraient sourire.

English — published: A cheerful heart and a cheerful face - both should be cheerful.

2. What one holds inwardly

The text asks one not to keep others’ mistakes in the heart and connects inner cleanliness with ease. Alignment is shifted: corresponding French appears in the row associated with hi212 and English in the row associated with hi211. The two French and two English sentences are exact excerpts from the published text; the anchor remains the actual Hindi original, hi210.

हिंदी — मूल / Hindi — original : 7 ) किसी की गलती चित्त पर न हो , चित्त साफ रखो तो चैन से रहेंगे .

Français — publié : Ne gardez pas les erreurs des autres dans votre cœur. Ayez un cœur propre et vous resterez tranquilles et sereins.

English — published: Do not keep anyone’s mistakes in your heart. Keep your heart clean and you will be able to be restful and comfortable.

Nuances and expressions to distinguish

On 30 October 2022, hi34–hi38, holding others’ faults inwardly is connected with unhappiness and repeating them in speech. This documents possible retention and rumination, but does not define a universal mechanism for storing memories.

On 11 April 2026, hi79 and hi100–hi101, compounds concern peace, humility and inner stability. The translations express these qualities, sometimes without a separate noun for चित्त. These adjectives should not be turned into new faculties.

On 13 April 2024, hi24–hi25, न मन, न चित्त is translated as not previously having this in one’s mind or heart. It concerns something the children had not thought of, rather than the abolition of mental faculties.

The search also returns 5 August 2022, hi147–hi149, with the spelling सत् चित्त आनंद in a formula about God. This compound use, whose translations are themselves shifted in alignment, is not used to invent an additional autonomous sense of the noun. The formula requires its own study.

Sources and scope

The first relevance-ranked page of the daily corpus returned 12 results, all surveyed. Six source pages were examined in French and English: 17 July 2022, 30 October 2022, 11 April 2026, 13 April 2024, 5 August 2022 and 27 March 2024. Reprints were not counted as independent evidence. The separate avyakt and mamma corpora were not surveyed. Daily also includes reprinted BapDada teachings. Lexical ranking does not measure doctrinal importance. The limited attestations call for a cautious definition without claiming to exhaust the word’s uses throughout the murlis.
