The word and its ordinary or cultural meanings
धारणा — dhāraṇā, shown as dhārṇā in the site’s transliteration, is a feminine Hindi noun of Sanskrit origin. Hindwi gives receiving or retaining, the capacity to hold something in the mind, and an idea or conviction. The act of retaining must therefore be distinguished from an already formed idea.
The Sanskrit dictionaries and Hindi WordNet collected by TransLiteral also attest concentration and its use in eight-limbed yoga. This cultural context does not by itself define BK usage: the passages below also discuss assimilating virtues and conduct.
The Murli dictionary entry includes dharna, impregnation and assimilation. The quotations clarify usage without treating the dictionary’s own definition as murli evidence.
Published translations of the word
The noun dharna is retained in French and English, notably on 20 February 2021 and 23 October 2022. It is a borrowing from Hindi. Constructions containing धारणा are also rendered by French s’imprégner de or assimiler, and English imbibe. The first French construction is attested on 27 December 2022; assimiler occurs on 13 January 2021 and 22 May 2023.
These verbs are actual published contextual translations rather than nouns to substitute everywhere. The noun forms assimilation and imprégnation are proposals in this dossier. Their plausibility and occurrence in the lexicon do not automatically make them published quotations from the selected examples.
Proposed translations
Imbibing or assimilation / assimilation suits making the teaching one’s own. Putting into practice / mise en pratique makes the dimension of conduct explicit when central. French imprégnation can convey gradual inner integration, but should not imply merely passive absorption. Dharna remains useful as the name of a component of spiritual life, provided it is explained.
No single choice fits every sentence: understanding may be too intellectual for a passage about virtues, while putting into practice may be too narrow when the immediate focus is retaining knowledge in the intellect. Translation should follow the use in context.
Two connected aspects: assimilating and embodying
The passages connect inward appropriation of knowledge with its expression in qualities and actions. These emphases can be distinguished without artificially opposing learning and living. Purity and sanskars are contents or results of this integration.
1. Assimilation in the intellect
The intellect is explicitly the locus of assimilation. The context concerns knowledge received and, in the following sentence hi157, relating it to others. This is therefore not merely memorising a formula without understanding it.
हिंदी — मूल / Hindi — original : तुम्हारी बुद्धि में धारणा हो रही है .
Français — publié : Votre intellect s'imprègne de tout.
English — published: Your intellects are imbibing everything.

2. Assimilation expressed in virtues
Virtues are a sign of having assimilated knowledge. Hi33–hi34 specify that conduct manifests its quality. The text therefore connects retained knowledge with the way one lives.
हिंदी — मूल / Hindi — original : दैवीगुण हों तो समझा जाए ज्ञान की धारणा है .
Français — publié : On peut comprendre que celui qui a des vertus divines a assimilé cette connaissance.
English — published: If someone has divine virtues, it can be understood that that one has imbibed knowledge.

3. A lived quality: purity
Complete purity is presented as elevated dharna. Here the noun refers to a quality adopted and maintained, rather than only the initial act of learning it. The sentence belongs to a blessing about renunciation and fidelity to that quality.
हिंदी — मूल / Hindi — original : ब्राह्मणों की श्रेष्ठ धारणा है सम्पूर्ण पवित्रता .
Français — publié : La dharna élevée des Brahmanes est la pureté complète.
English — published: The elevated dharna of Brahmins is complete purity.

4. Integration into nature and sanskars
Integration becomes deep enough to characterise nature and sanskars. Hi50–hi60 connect knowledge, yoga and dharna, questioning the claim to good knowledge while practical assimilation remains weak.
हिंदी — मूल / Hindi — original : नेचुरल स्वभाव-संस्कार ही धारणा स्वरूप होंगे .
Français — publié : Leur nature et leurs sanskars seront naturellement l’incarnation de la dharna.
English — published: Their nature and sanskars will naturally be of embodiments of dharna.

5. Imbibing according to one’s capacity
The passage allows for differences in capacity to imbibe. It does not invite abandonment of practice; it recognises that even a small amount can be assimilated. This confirms that the word can concern what one manages to receive and retain.
हिंदी — मूल / Hindi — original : बहुत नहीं धारणा कर सकते हैं तो फिर थोड़ा ही सही .
Français — publié : Si vous ne pouvez pas beaucoup assimiler; alors un peu, c’est déjà bien.
English — published: If you cannot imbibe very much, then even a little will do.

Nuances and scope of practice
On 23 October 2022, hi15–hi26 and hi50–hi60, connected subjects of study are discussed and dharna is linked with knowledge and yoga. Practical assimilation is not an unrelated addition to understanding: knowledge is to take form in the person.
On 27 December 2022, hi156–hi157, assimilation in the intellect is connected with transmission. This helps explain why some passages also ask for helping others to imbibe: one must make what has been integrated comprehensible to others. This application does not make the noun a general synonym for service.
Concentration in classical yoga belongs to the cultural context, but should not automatically replace BK uses of the term. Conversely, conviction alone does not capture passages evaluating virtues and actions. The word must also be distinguished from धरना, which can denote a sit-in protest: the Hindi spelling studied here is धारणा.
On 22 May 2023, hi139, however, the Hindi and published English describe good assimilation of knowledge alongside inconstant yoga. French alignment is shifted there. This nuance should be preserved: some passages describe a particular intellectual capacity, whereas 23 October 2022 stresses ideal integration. Well-retained knowledge alone therefore does not prove fully integrated practice.
Sources and limits
Two relevance-ranked pages of the daily corpus were consulted, containing 40 excerpts. Five source pages were examined in French and English: 27 December 2022, 13 January 2021, 20 February 2021, 23 October 2022 and 22 May 2023. Reprints were not counted as independent evidence. Alignments are not always sentence-for-sentence; selected examples were compared in context. Daily includes reprinted BapDada teachings; the separate avyakt and mamma collections were not surveyed. Lexical relevance measures neither doctrinal importance nor the frequency of a sense. This selection is not exhaustive.
