स्वभाव — svabhāv: nature, character and spiritual transformation

The definitions and explanations are newly written editorial material, translated from the French draft. Examples preserve Hindi sentences and the French and English translations actually published in the cited sources.
The word and its ordinary meanings
स्वभाव — svabhāv is a masculine Hindi noun of Sanskrit origin. Hindwi distinguishes a thing’s characteristic property, a person’s temperament and habit. Nature therefore need not imply that everything experienced as natural is innate or unchangeable. The dictionary itself gives examples of change and acquired habit.
The Murli dictionary entry includes nature, temperament, disposition and character. The passages clarify how these meanings connect with spiritual transformation.
Published translations of the word
French: nature. English: nature. This equivalent occurs in all five examples, including 7 May 2023 and 13 December 2020. The passage of 5 February 2023 also preserves swabhav as a term being explained and renders the reinterpretation through soul-conscious feelings. The whole explanation should not be assigned to the noun as if it were a simple lexical equivalent.
Character, temperament, habitual disposition and habit are useful proposals, but are not claimed here as published equivalents found in the selected quotations. Occurrence in a general dictionary does not establish that status in a particular murli.
Proposed translations
Nature remains the preferred equivalent. Character suits traits expressed in human relationships. Temperament emphasises the manner of reacting. Habitual disposition conveys recurrence without suggesting that change is impossible. Habit suits a particular repeated behaviour, but would be too narrow for every occurrence.
For the spiritual reinterpretation, explanation is preferable to automatically replacing the word with soul consciousness. The passage depends on the contrast between the familiar meaning of nature and the elevated meaning it proposes.
BK uses: habitual nature and a spiritual reading
The principal use concerns nature expressed in daily life and subject to transformation. Sweetness, peace and resemblance to the Father are qualities or aims rather than separate dictionary senses. The final example documents a spiritual reading explicitly developed in a particular passage.
1. An old disposition to transform
The text names an old nature that deceives one in spiritual effort. Hi102–hi108 ask for its transformation and criticise treating one’s nature as an excuse for inaction. Habitual character is therefore not presented as destiny.
हिंदी — मूल / Hindi — original : पुराना स्वभाव पुरुषार्थी जीवन में धोखा देता है .
Français — publié : Votre vieille nature vous illusionne dans votre vie de faiseur d’efforts.
English — published: The old nature deceives you in your effort-making life.

2. A sweet and peaceful nature
Sweetness and peace qualify nature. Nearby sentences compare behaviour and speech with those of deities, according to the BK ideal. This describes a quality expressed in relationships rather than only a passing feeling of calm.
हिंदी — मूल / Hindi — original : बिल्कुल मीठे शान्त स्वभाव के हैं .
Français — publié : Ils sont complètement doux et ont une nature paisible.
English — published: They are absolutely sweet and have peaceful natures.

3. A habitual way of being: peacefulness
The wording connects nature with a way of being: remaining peaceful. This is close to a practised, habitual disposition rather than another faculty called स्वभाव.
हिंदी — मूल / Hindi — original : शान्त रहने का स्वभाव बहुत अच्छा है .
Français — publié : La nature d'être paisible est très bonne.
English — published: The nature of being peaceful is very good.
Murli · daily · 2021-08-25 · hi40 · FR · EN
4. The Father as the model for one’s nature
The Father is the model for transformation. The sentence expresses an aim, not a claim that everyone’s present traits already match the Father’s. The context specifically distinguishes limited habits from this ideal.
हिंदी — मूल / Hindi — original : बाप का स्वभाव सो मेरा स्वभाव हो .
Français — publié : La nature du Père devrait être la mienne.
English — published: The Father's nature has to be my nature.
Murli · daily · 2020-12-13 · hi118 · FR · EN
5. Reinterpretation: soul-conscious feelings
The passage develops a spiritual reading around स्व का भाव. Hi57 introduces the explanation and hi61 extends it to oneself and everyone else. It belongs to this teaching passage, not independent historical etymology, and does not erase the meaning of temperament elsewhere.
हिंदी — मूल / Hindi — original : तो स्वभाव अर्थात् स्व प्रति व सर्व प्रति आत्मिक भाव हो .
Français — publié : Ainsi, swabhav (la nature) veut dire des sentiments de conscience d’âme pour soi et pour tous les autres.
English — published: So swabhav (nature) means to have soul-conscious feelings for yourself and for everyone else.

Relationship with संस्कार
On 5 February 2023, hi56–hi64 and 13 December 2020, hi116–hi120, nature and sanskars are explicitly associated. Both contribute to describing dispositions that affect conduct. These passages do not establish a sharp technical boundary assigning innate traits to one and acquired traits to the other.
For translation, स्वभाव can foreground character or habitual ways of reacting, while संस्कार retains its own field of habits and dispositions. This is a cautious reading distinction rather than an exclusive equivalence. The dossier establishes neither that all nature is immutable nor that every स्वभाव is reducible to one sanskar.
Divine and old nature belong to a spiritual evaluation. These terms should not turn people into biological categories or psychological diagnoses. The quotations describe qualities and their transformation within BK teaching.
Sources and scope
Two relevance-ranked pages of the daily corpus were consulted, containing 40 excerpts. Five source pages were examined in French and English: 7 May 2023, 5 February 2023, 13 December 2020, 22 April 2023 and 25 August 2021. Reprints were not counted as independent evidence. The spiritual reading is illustrated here by an explicit passage of 5 February 2023, not automatically assigned to every occurrence. Daily includes reprinted BapDada teachings; the separate avyakt and mamma corpora were not surveyed. Lexical relevance measures neither doctrinal importance nor the frequency of a sense. This selection is not exhaustive.
