alifuʼllāh, « L'alif de (du mot) allāh الله »; adj. Seul, sans amis, n'ayant aucun ami sauf Dieu; sans ressources, pauvre.

Sa prononciation dépend de la voyelle qui l'accompagne ; exemple ا avec fatḥa (اَ) = le Devanāgarī अ = l'anglais a, comme dans cedar (ou = l'anglais u dans fun) ; ا avec kasra (اِ) = le Devanāgarī इ = l'anglais i, comme dans fin ; ا avec ẓamma (اُ) = le Devanāgarī उ = l'anglais u, comme dans bull. — ا avec fatḥa, suivi par ا, (i.e. اَا, qui est usuellement écrit آ) = le Devanāgarī आ = l'anglais ā, comme dans father ; ا avec fatḥa, suivi par la lettre و, (i.e. اَو) = le Devanāgarī औ = l'anglais au (prononcé comme dans house) ; ا avec fatḥa, suivi par la lettre ي, (i.e. اَي), = le Devanāgarī ऐ = l'anglais ai, comme dans aisle. — ا avec ẓamma, suivi par la lettre و, (i.e. اُو), = 1˚, le Devanāgarī ऊ = l'anglais u, comme dans rule (ou = le oo dans pool), et, 2˚, = le Devanāgarī ओ = l'anglais o, comme dans pole. — ا avec kasra, suivi par ي, (i.e. اِي), = 1˚, le Devanāgarī ई = l'anglais ī, comme dans caprice ; et, 2˚, = le Devanāgarī ए = le français e, comme dans fête.
ا est utilisé, — 1˚ (arithmétiquement, selon le Abjad, q.v.) pour le nombre un. 2˚ (pour अ, dans les almanachs et l'astrologie) pour Dimanche, et Aries (Taureau). 3˚ (pour अ) comme un nom du dieu Vishnou. 4˚ comme un préfixe inséparable d'un mot commençant par une consonne, pour exprimer une négation ou la privation : exemple aśuddha, 'impur,' 'incorrect.' Comme dans le grec, a devient an devant une voyelle ; exemple ananta, 'sans fin'

As in Greek, a becomes an before a vowel; e.g. ananta, 'without end,' 'endless.'
