वार vāra va:r (nm) an assault; a stroke, blow; a day of the week; the nearer side (as against पार—the farther side); (nf) (not in common use) a harlot, courtesan (as वारवधू); as a suffix it means 'wise' on the basis of (as भाषाचार languagewise, ब्यौरेवार detailed; राज्यवार statewise), and also वाला (as सोग़वार); -पार full expanse; this side and the other; across, from this side to the other; ॰करना to pierce through; -पार होना to be run through; to traverse the whole expanse; ~वधू/वनिता/विलासिनी/सुन्दरी a prostitute; —करना to strike; —ख़ाली जाना/चूकना a stroke to go amiss, to miss the target, to fan the air.
