When to get up? Definition of prabhāt (early morning)

Murli point of Friday 12 July 2024

Shri Krishna takes birth at amrit vela, not at night. People celebrate the Night of Shiva, but there is no date or time for that. The birth of Shri Krishna takes place at amrit vela. Amrit vela is considered to be the most auspicious time (muhūrt). Those people celebrate Shri Krishna’s birth at midnight, but that is not the time of dawn (prabhāt). Dawn (prabhāt) is around 2.00 to 3.00 am when you are also able to remember God. It isn't that someone would get up at midnight after indulging in vice and remember God; not at all! Amrit vela is not at midnight. At that time, human beings are impure and dirty. The atmosphere is very bad at that time. No one gets up at 2.30 am. Amrit vela is around 3.00 to 4.00 am. People awaken at that time and perform devotion. They fixed that time themselves, but there isn't really a fixed time.

Notes

prabhāt translates to "early morning, dawn, daybreak". It is translated here as "dawn" but "dawn" is a reference to the position of the sun. So I prefer to translate by "early morning".

Interpretation

Prabhāt "Early morning, dawn" is a time early in the day when Hindus begin their devotion. It is a moment considered very auspicious.

There are specific times: sunrise, 48 minutes before sunrise, and another 48 minutes before that to start certain activities. (Hindus divide the day into 30 periods of 48 minutes).

For us, it is not the sun that counts, but the moments when we can get closer to Bābā more easily, when remembering Him is easier.

These auspicious times are when the majority of people are asleep. This happens around 2 or 3 in the morning. So this is the time when meditation is likely to be the most powerful, when we can feel the closeness of God more and when we can more easily burn our past bad karma.

The amrit vela can therefore begin as early as 2 a.m.

But to satisfy the majority of yogis, the official time is from 4 a.m. to 4:45 a.m.

Those who get up earlier and/or meditate longer in the early morning will have greater fortune. They will have burned more sins and will therefore suffer less punishment in the end and therefore their position in the golden age will not be called into question.
