This ancient marriage tradition from the Indian subcontinent was based on consensual acceptance between two people, with no rituals, witnesses or family participation. In the Indian perspective, the marriages of Shakuntala-Dushyant, Pururava-Urvashi, Vasavadatta-Udayan are famous examples of Gandharva marriages.
