The underground river Vaitaraṇī, leading the dead to the kingdom of Yama; it is the Indian Styx.
The Vaitarani River is mentioned in the most ancient Garuda Purana. Those who have sinned must cross this river after they have died. According to the Garuda Purana, the river flows outside the south gate of the Yamaloka. It states that only sinners can enter through this gate after death.
